Adam Vella hit a grand slam home run in the sixth inning
to help power the Brantford Red Sox to a 12-7 win over
the Stratford Nationals in the annual Canadian Baseball
Hall of Fame game played Saturday afternoon in St.
Mary’s.
The Red Sox scored four runs in the fourth and four more
in the sixth on Vella’s blast to break open a close game
in the annual affair played at St. Mary’s at the
Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
Brantford had 13 hits to move within 2 ½ games of first
place in the IBL, still in fourth place a half game
behind the London Majors.
The Nationals dropped to 4-21 in what was a home game
for them as they have just 11 regular season games left,
still trying to get into one of the eight playoff spots.
Corey Pappel picked up the win with four shutout and
hitless innings of relief, striking out six and walking
one. Lee Delfino had two hits, including a homer, and
drove in a pair of runs for Brantford.
Losing pitcher Mitch Masse went 5 1/3 innings, allowing
six runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and four
walks.
Dallas Pearson had two hits, including a homer, and
drove in five runs in a losing cause for the Nationals.

In
Stratford, the London Majors scored 10 runs in
the first inning and then cruised to a 17-10 win over
the host Nationals.
Jess Bechard paced the 21-hit attack for the
Majors with four hits, including a homer, and drove in
three runs as London stayed tied for second place with the convincing
win, while keeping Stratford (2-14) in last place.
Winning pitcher Medhi Diebbar had plenty of
offensive support to get the win. He lasted 5 2/3
innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with eight
strikeouts and one walk.
Loser Mike McGillary lasted just 1/3 inning,
charged with nine runs in the first inning on seven hits
with four walks. Winter Fuentes drove in three runs for
the Nationals, who also committed three errors.

In Toronto,
the Stratford Nationals scored four runs in the eighth
inning to stun the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-4 at Christie
Pits.
Trailing
4-2 after seven innings, the big eighth inning led the
Nationals to just their third win in 16 games this
season, while the struggling Maple Leafs dropped to 7-5.
Stratford
starter Justin Pennell went seven innings for the win,
allowing four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and
five walks. Reliever Chadwick Cameron pitched two
scoreless innings to get the save, allowing two hits and
striking out two and walking one.
George Agopong-Mansah hit a two-run homer
and drove in two runs for the Nationals, while Tyler
Graham added a two-run double. Nathan West added three
hits and an RBI for the winners.
Starter Drew Taylor pitched seven solid
innings for the Maple Leafs, allowing two runs on eight
hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. But reliever
Jeff Reeves allowed four runs in the eighth on three
hits and took the loss.
Dan Gibbons
had a solo homer for Toronto
while Damon Topolie had two hits.

June 7 - Baycats sweep Nationals to improve to 11-1 -Game

The
Barrie Baycats continued their roll as they swept a
doubleheader from the Stratford Nationals on Saturday in
Barrie to improve their record to a league best 11-1 in
Intercounty Baseball League play Sunday.
In the opener,
Brad Bissell pitched a complete game four-hitter as the
Baycats got by the Nationals 2-1.
Bissell struck
out eight and walked three and got the win when the
Baycats punched across the winning run in the bottom of
the seventh inning. Ryan Asis and Dave Latour drove in
the runs for Barrie, who managed just four hits.
Corey Hammond
was the loser, allowing one run on three hits over 5 1/3
innings, striking out one and walking four. The
Nationals also had just four hits, with George Agopong-Mensa
driving in their lone run.
In the second
game, a four-run fifth inning was the difference as the
Baycats completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory.
Randy Schwartz
two-run triple in the fifth drove in what turned out to
be the winning runs for the Baycats, improving Barrie to
11-1. Schwartz also added a double while Asis went
2-for-3 including a double and also drove in a run.
Angus Roy
pitched six solid innings to pick up the victory,
allowing four runs – three earned – on four hits with
three walks. Kyle Payne pitched a perfect ninth to pick
up the save.
Mitch Masse
was the loser, allowing five runs on eight hits over 4
2/3 innings with one strikeout and two walks. Dallas
Pearson hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs for
the Nationals, who slipped to 2-13 with the two losses.

In Guelph, the Stratford Nationals won for just the
second time this season, scoring seven runs in the top of the
eighth inning to rout the host Royals 16-9.
Stratford almost blew a 9-0 lead as the Royals scored
seven runs in their sixth inning to close the score to 9-8, but
the Nationals pounded out 15 hits to prevail and improve to 2-9,
while the Royals dropped back to the .500 mark at 5-5.
Dallas Pearson had four hits and drove in four runs for
the Nationals, while Jose Soto had three RBI and two hits.
Winder Fuentes scored three runs, had two hits and drove in two
more for the Nationals.
Mike McGillwray got the win, allowing five runs on four
hits over five innings, striking out walk and walking three.
Mike Walker had two doubles and drove in two runs for the
Royals, while Mark Allen had three hits and an RBI. Loser
Patrick Warden allowed six runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings,
striking out seven and walking four.

In Brantford, the Red Sox pounded out 22 hits and
scored eight runs in the fifth inning to crush the
Stratford Nationals 17-1.
Wayne Foreman had four singles to pace the
Red Sox attack as Brantford improved to 6-2 on the season with the
easy win, while the Nationals dropped to 1-9.
Justin Wendt had three hits, including a
solo homer, walked twice, scored three runs and had four
RBI for the Red Sox. Josh McCurdy added three hits, all
singles, while Jason Gotwalt had a solo homer and a
single and walked.
It was an easy night for pitcher Scott
Robinson, who picked up the win by going six innings. He
allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts and
two walks before Cory pappel finished up with three
shutout innings of relief, striking out three and
walking three.
Losing pitcher Cory Hammond went four
innings, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits with three
strikeouts and four walks.

In
Kitchener, the Panthers scored seven runs in the
bottom of the third inning as Kitchener won its first game of the season after
nine straight losses, beating the Stratford Nationals 12-6.
The Panthers pounded out 14 hits and never looked back after
their big third inning to move within a half game of the
Nationals (1-8) in the standings for the final playoff spot
in the league.
Carlos Birriel picked up the win for the Panthers and struck
out 14 Nationals, allowing three runs on nine hits over
seven innings with one walk. Mike Andrulis drove in five
runs for Kitchener, going 3-for-4 with a single, double
and triple, while Justin Gianfrancesco had three hits,
including a pair of double, and two RBI.
Losing pitcher Shawn Gillespie went five innings, allowing
nine runs on seven hits, striking out seven and walking six.
Tyler Graham hit a pair of solo home runs and had three hits
for Stratford, while Dallas Pearson went 4-for-5.

In
Stratford, the Barrie Baycats swept a doubleheader from the
host Nationals, with a remarkable game one going 11 innings before Barrie finally prevailed.
Barrie won the
opener 10-7, scoring four runs in the top of the 11th inning
to finally wrap it up after blowing a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the
seventh inning. Starter Chris England carried a no-hitter into the
seventh and final inning but the Nationals scored five runs to tie the
game, three of them coming on a three-run homer by Winder Fuentes.
Winning
pitcher Jacob Hines went two innings of relief for the win, allowing one
hit and striking out two. Todd Betts led the Baycats attack with four
hits, including a homer, and drove in four runs.
Loser Cory
Hammond went four innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits with
three strikeouts and two walks, with Fuentes having a total of three
hits.
The Baycats
completed the sweep with a 5-2 win in game two. Scott Price got the win,
going six innings and allowing one earned run on seven hits with three
strikeouts and one walk. Ryan Spataro had two hits, including a homer,
for Barrie.
Mike McGilluary took the loss, pitching a complete game and allowing five
runs, four earned, on 11 hits with five strikeouts and one walk. George
Agopong-Mansah had two hits and drove in a run for the Nationals, now
1-8 on the season.
